    Smartworking: the Future of Work.

The Future of Work has been coined as one of the hot topics for 2018. The workplace of the future needs to be centred on the Digital Workplace.

Smartworking is the new ‘quite revolution’[1] that is emerging in enterprises. It is ‘a business-focused approach to flexible working that delivers more efficiency and effectiveness in work organisation, service delivery and organisational agility, as well as benefits for workers and the environment’[2]. It allows enterprises to respond to employee demands for greater autonomy and flexibility, and it also delivers tangible business benefits in terms of increased productivity, lower operational costs and higher levels of engagement. Indeed, the UK government believes that smartworking is the most modern, evidence-based form of flexible working1, and that it is the best way to work for business and for the individual; so much so that the UK Governments British Standards Institution (BSI) has recently launched a new code of practice on Smart Working to help companies to implement smartworking practices.

Central to smartworking is a digital strategy. Flexible working- i.e. working anywhere, anytime- is not possible without digital technology: digital work processes and workflows (eliminating the paperwork) and digital collaboration tools; simply put, the ‘virtualised workplace’.

There are two routes to virtualisation of the workplace. The current route, which is heading rapidly towards ‘over-fragmentation’ in terms of the high number of niche tools being used leading to information silos, disjointed user/workplace experience, technology stress, costs and maintenance. The alternative route- which we believe is the futureproof route- is to consolidate the digital workplace through a platform approach. One Workplace. One Digital Platform. One Workplace Experience.
